New Category II and III Code Updates 2009

The AMA recently released the 2009 CPT Code Updates which become effective Jan 1.

New Category II and III Code Updates 2009

This report contains over 150 new Category ll Codes, which are supplemental tracking codes that can be used for performance measurements. In addition, there are 13 Category lll Codes that contain a temporary set of codes for emerging technologies, services, and procedures.

  • Over 150 New Category II Codes. These codes are supplemental tracking codes that can be used for performance measurements. The use of these codes is optional. The codes are not required for correct coding and may not be used as a substitute for Category I CPT codes. These codes describe clinical components that may be typically included in evaluation and management services or clinical services and, therefore, do not have a relative value associated with them.
  • Category II codes may also describe results from clinical laboratory or radiology tests and other procedures, identified processes intended to address patient safety practices, or services reflecting compliance with state or federal law. These codes are assigned an alphanumeric identifier with a letter “F” in the last character (eg, 1234F).
  • 13 Category III Codes. This section of CPT codes contains a temporary set of codes for emerging technologies, services, and procedures. Category III CPT codes allow data collection for these services or procedures. Use of unlisted codes does not offer the opportunity for collection of specific data.
  • If a Category III code is available, this code must be reported instead of a Category I unlisted code. This is an activity that is critically important in the evaluation of health care delivery and the formation of public and private policy.
  • These codes are intended to be used for data collection purposes to substantiate widespread usage or within the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval process. These codes are assigned an alphanumeric identifier with a letter “T” in the last character (eg, 1234T).
