New 2012 ICD-9 Code Updates

Each year, BDA provides tools to assist physicians and organizations with the ICD-9 code changes. We’ve put together a Power Point presentation that goes over these new 2012 ICD9 changes for you, which you may view or download below. October 1 is when the 2012 ICD-9-CM codes take effect. Neglecting to update your existing billing software with the new updates could delay claims which may result in delayed payments.
2012 ICD-9 Changes
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have posted the new, revised and invalid ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes for 2012. The updated code set will be effective for dates of service on or after Oct. 1. Post the October 1 deadline, CMS will only add new ICD-9 codes on an emergency basis as it gears up to switch over the diagnosis coding system to ICD-10.
In the 2012 “New” ICD-9 category, there are several new codes for Dermatology Coders. The new “derm” codes make it easier in reporting the location of carcinomas and other neoplasms of the skin. There is an expansion of the 173.x (Other malignant neoplasm of skin) series. In this series, each code will have a 5th digit that will specify whether the malignant neoplasm is basal cell, squamous cell or unspecified.

The International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification is used to code and classify morbidity data from the inpatient and outpatient records, physician offices, and most National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) surveys.

* These diagnosis codes were discussed at the March 9-10, 2010 ICD-9-CM Coordination and Maintenance Committee meeting and were not finalized in time to include in the proposed rule. However, they will be implemented on October 1, 2010. Please note that new code 237.78, Other neurofibromatosis, that was listed as a new diagnosis code in the proposed rule has been modified to new code 237.79. New code 799.50, Unspecified signs and symptoms involving cognition, that was listed in the proposed rule as a new code has been deleted and will not be implemented on October 1, 2010.
**The code title has changed from the proposed rule.
Updated ICD-9 Guidelines
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), two departments within the U.S. Federal Government's Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) provide these updated guidelines for coding and reporting using the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). These guidelines should be used as a companion document to the official version of the ICD-9-CM as published on CD-ROM by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO).
The official updated guidelines released by the CDC have been approved by the four organizations that make up the Cooperating Parties for the ICD-9-CM: the American Hospital Association (AHA), the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), CMS, and NCHS.
