Each year, BDA provides tools to assist physicians and organizations with the ICD-9 code changes. We’ve put together a Power Point presentation that goes over these revised 2012 ICD9 changes for you, which you may view or download below. We also have a presentation covering the New ICD-9 Codes for 2012
The Revised Code section presents all of the language revisions to prior ICD codes. It is important to note the updated language regarding many of the existing codes, to ensure proper and accurate code utilization. A code that is selected improperly due to outdated language may result in a delay in payment.
In order to provide you with the most up-to-date language, we have included the 2012 revised language in blue. For example, 488.11 in prior years was defined as ‘Influenza due to identified novel H1N1 influenza virus with pneumonia’; the revised language for 2012 replaced “novel” with “2009″.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), two departments within the U.S. Federal Government's Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) provide these updated guidelines for coding and reporting using the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). These guidelines should be used as a companion document to the official version of the ICD-9-CM as published on CD-ROM by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO).
The official updated guidelines released by the CDC have been approved by the four organizations that make up the Cooperating Parties for the ICD-9-CM: the American Hospital Association (AHA), the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), CMS, and NCHS.
