Bill Dunbar and Associates - Providing Revenue Growth Strategies to Medical Coding Professionals, Hospitals, and Practices throughout the US

Urgent Care

3, 4 and 5-digit ICD-9 (diagnosis) codes, CPT-4 codes, modifier codes, facility codes, HCPCS codes... with so many urgent care coding options, it's no wonder healthcare centers can become confused amidst this complexity.

Among the primary causes of lost revenue in an urgent care setting is simply:

  • Lack of appropriate documentation
  • Inaccurate coding.

It is never intentional, but in hectic days filled with constant walk-in patients, never-ending phone calls and medical crises, it happens.

Proper medical coding is essential, but many providers are unsure of the correct codes, since their business is taking care of patients, not documentation and coding. Unfortunately if a payer receives inaccurate codes or a lack of supporting documentation, payment may be delayed or the claim may be entirely rejected.

Maintaining Accuracy and Compliance in the Medical Record

Why is accuracy and compliance to accepted standards of documentation in the medical record important? The first and most important reason is to provide patients with appropriate care based on details provided in their medical record. This ensures optimal patient care and allows for excellent patient satisfaction. Another reason for ensuring accuracy and compliance in the medical record is to provide governmental agencies, and any other entity accessing the patient’s medical record accurate and complete information. With improved documentation, collections improve, the risk for unfavorable audit results decreases, and efficiencies are increased in the office with both staff and physician co-workers.
